Interesting article. I especially like the authors comment: "Based on my observations I would estimate that the differences we found between HR recovery and repeated performance are more attributable to an individual athlete’s fitness than their recovery positions."
HR training was first used to determine how quickly an athlete's HR dropped under 110 as a sign of recovery. The more fit, the quicker their HR would drop after exercise. On the track, the proper definition of intervals is having the athlete run as fast as possible IOT reach 180 BPM then stopped to see how quickly HR dropped below 110 over and over again.
