Every spring I used to sponsor a shoot.
We would gather non shooters 3 to 10 people and provide the ammo and guns and then train them on the safety and use first. Then work them up to the firing line individually with an experienced shooter as safety standing with them.
No one was allowed to hold a weapon or go to the firing line without their safety with them.
It was great fun and many times the people would ask months later to do it again.
Response is always the same. Sure, but this time you have to pay for all the ammo.
Then they typically go buy their own guns and ammo. Works like a charm.

I still have the full suspension mtn bikes I bought back in 1998, A Trec and a Giant.
Just put new brake pads and tires on and they run forever.
Granted you can break stuff on the trail like:
Derailleurs, constantly clipping trees and rocks this is the biggest problem I have mtn biking.
Helmets, broke two
Rims, on bad crashes
Tires, not often
Tubes, it happens
Chain, rarely
So my answer was to bring two bikes to the trail. Gotta love backup.
