Thanks for the link to the transcript. Libertarianism shares something in common with communism--they both work in theory as long as you ignore human nature. It sounds good to be totally free, to have liberty, little gov't and no entanglements overseas. That ideal will bloody its nose up against reality pretty quickly. The first year of a libertarian America, some lawyer will say "but this restricts my client" or some interest group will say "we need more oversight of the XYZ industry." Then we'll start all over again, rebuilding a democratic republic with an ever-increasing government. That's one of the laws of organizational behavior--every organization will grow. Even "small government" Ronald Reagan grew the government--by every measure--hugely.
Weld (and Johnson) don't understand how money works at the national and international levels. We are the world's reserve currency. The world depends upon the dollar, and the value of the dollar depends upon America's economy. Since we're at the top of the food chain and shit flows downhill, all the other countries will do whatever it takes to support the "full faith and credit" of the dollar. Whether our debt to China or Japan is 1 trillion or 100 trillion, they know the way to get their interest payments is to continue to buy treasuries, NOT to demand repayment in full. If we default, it would hurts us a bit, but it would absolutely devastate the countries further down the food chain.
Those Libertarian boys don't have a detailed plan for a balanced budget because once you get into the details, it doesn't work. First, you'll need to defund some really big national interests, like all the nuclear weapons and lay off all those scientists and engineers. Can you say "unemployed people don't pay income taxes?" Get rid of the legally mandated Social Security benefits--yeah, right. A generation of starving grandmas. Second, you'll probably need to at least double the income tax revenues--good luck with that!
That said. I like them. They seem nice.

At one time, I was a Beck fan, but his trolley has come off the tracks. Too bad.
