Great article. This was part of the unrest leading to the revolutions all over central Europe in 1848. After the failure in 1848, many liberal Germans fled to the US, settling in the ares opening up that became Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Ever notice that the highest performers on national education ranking are always those three states in one order or another? That goes right back to the liberal (for the times) state constitutions written in large part by the German liberal revolutionaries, that insured local education was well financed through property tax. In other words, the wealthiest class was responsible for keeping the schools financed, and the results are still seen today in those national rankings.

Everything is connected to everything.
