In my opinion the Battle of Guadalcanal is the most significant battle in the war in the Pacific. It was the fist time we delivered a loss to the Japanese after the ran roughshod over much of the Southeast Asia and Pacific regions. Had we not stopped them there and rolled them back, Australia was at risk which was our best launching point option for war in the Pacific. Defeating the Japanese also send a message to the Japanese high command that they had indeed awaked a sleeping giant (Yamamoto was attributed this quote but there is no evidence he actually said it or wrote it).

Correct - it was the true turning point of the Pacific. Additionally, we would learn valuable damage control lessons which would save lives later on.

I highly recommend Eric Hammell's three volume trilogy of the Guadalcanal battle. Also Dr Robert Ballard's "The Ghost Fleet Of Guadalcanal."
