You serve at the pleasure of your employer, piss them off you get fired. Maybe he shouldn't have intentionally pissed them off. The article isn't exactly chock filled with information.

I'd estimate that there's a 97% chance that whatever the exact reason he was fire was, it was still total bull. If he was saying things that his CO didn't like, they'd totally find an excuse to get rid of him (so basically, yes, he was probably fired for speaking out).
