Wow! It is incredible to watch a missile fire! I think it was 1987/88 when I saw a night launch of one of the space shuttles. I was in Winter Haven, FL and so about 100 miles from Cape Canaveral where it was launched. I watched outside for what felt like a half an hour as it burned a path until it was out of sight. I recall that when the Challenger exploded a few seconds after lift off in April 1986 it was about 11 AM in broad day light but I saw the fireball for minutes in Lakeland.
