SGT (Join to see) I use this program for all of my mp4 encoding. When is comes to mkv encoding, I use RipBot264. It can be found here: http://www.videohelp.com/software/RipBot264
RipBot264 is a an easy to use All-In-One Converter. Convert from DVD, Blu-ray or any video to iPod, iPad, PSP, PS3, XBOX360, PC, MAC, MP4, MKV, Blu-ray or AVCHD without exotic filters and unnecessary settings. Requires Java 32bit, AVisynth, ffdshow, haali media splitter and .Net Framework.

From the little bit I just read, MKV is good for enclosing audio and video files with different formats with subtitles, and menus. Does Handbrake not handle MKV as well as RipBot264 ?

Handbrake does an okay job with MKV files. I have found that RipBot264 is a little faster on the encoding. It is also easier to fine tune your settings for file size, audio codec, audio bitrate, video bitrate, and video resolution. In my opinion, it's tools for cleaning up videos work a little bit better as well.

Yes, I do know about Sourceforge, but many here do not. Or they may neither have the time or knowledge about the existence of such reputable apps. That's why I share it. Making lives easier.

Handbrake is great at ripping and joining files -very fast. DVD-shrink is great at reducing file size - not so fast. I manly use them to put movies on my daughter's and wife's tablets for when we travel and also to save room on my NAS which I have hooked up to a XBMC - MySQL backend set-up.
On a side note - I also just got my HD Homerun prime - great device can't say enough about it. I can get cable TV/PVR on any wireless/wired device (I use the Kodi addon) and using some other software (Emby) on the road with all my other music and movies - I as well use Domoticz (HA to control z-wave lights and more) with an add-on I wrote for XBMC. When I start a movie lights dim automatically and ramp up on pause or end/stop. I think you mentioned Kodi before - so here's a like to my GitHub for the add-on. Killer set-up (mostly free except for devices) that's wife approved. Daughter is very tech savvy and is wanting to integrate Echo and Sonos into the mix - I created a tech monster with her.

SGT (Join to see) - Handbrake is faster, hands down...and scales with your cpu horsepower. Imagine what it'd do if they used your GPU horse.

SPC David S. , It was likely SSgt Mark Lines that mentioned Kodi. I don't have a need for a HTPC, but he might try it out. Handbrake is faster and scaleable. Sweet. Thanks SN Greg Wright .
