I run a full desk for a staffing agency. From start to finish, my role is to find businesses that are in needed of staffing, provide them with a staffing solution and fulfill the needs of their company. I have found that many of these companies do not understand the benefits or breadth and depth of experience that hiring a veteran can bring to their company. I have taken it upon myself to educate employers we work with to ensure that they understand that the military isn't just full of "dumb grunts who joined because they didn't have options", to make sure they understand the level of education and experience that many of us can bring to the table. I can tell you that TAP does not properly prepare veterans for resume writing and only provides rudimentary tips on job seeking.
Full cycle recruiting is not broken, but the online application process is. I find and place the majority of my candidates through my network and we rarely use online boards. If you truly want a position, use your network to expand it to someone who works in the organization you are applying to. if you can put a face to your name, many times that's all it take to get an interview or get in the door. Leverage RallyPoint, FaceBook, LinkedIn and any other resources you have. Study the structure of the organization and identify decision makers that can open doors. Don't show up empty handed either. We have a lot of knowledge and experience, and if they do open that door, always remember to offer to help them in some way if you are ever able to. This changes the dynamic from making you a beggar into a resource. But applying online is like throwing your resume in a black hole. Your adding a resume to a faceless lottery system where you are hoping your number get drawn against a pool of either hundreds or thousands of other numbers.
