The recent run of accidents, serious accidents at sea, emphasize this point. Trying to carry out the same or enlarged mission with dwindling resources will be disastrous in the long and short-term. It will take the bosses a long time to acknowledge this by scaling back missions and not trying to respond to so many crises throughout the world. So far the Navy has responded by simple non-fixes - firing COs and putting more pressure on those who survive e. A very short sited dance of death for them.

No question that our Navy is overwhelmed by mission assigned. Was there ever a time, peacetime or wartime, when we weren’t at our limits? Not during my career, missions in preparation for combat and actual combat were the norm. When I read the incident reports, I read a systemic failure of leadership. Unless we stop with the excuses and exert leadership as in the past, no quantity of warships will resolve this situation in the long term. Perhaps, I am jaded by serving on submarines on watch in the Control Room where activities are tightly managed by an OOD.
