I wouldn't just say Navy - maybe in general we are the only ones in that area due to - water, but the larger picture as listed in the article is that our influence is waning in the region due to many factors and that should be a cause for concern. Usually such perceptions of weakness will result in the coming decades in our utilization of military force in some regard, and with that - a whole different perception of warfare and a different doctrine developed by those without the experience or utilization of tried and true techniques and cultural knowledge of our foes.

I will throw out this sidebar: While China has long been feared as a threat - there are many volatile things going on there now that limit them. I wonder how the next 50 years will play out there, in the Middle East and with Russia and India.

Cute but hardly accurate. I think the world knows full well that the only reason they can tweak the nose of any branch of the US military is that their Commander-in-Chief is a feckless coward who will keep a firm grip on the leash. I'm also certain that they are watching this year's elections with great interest knowing full well that the result could change things dramatically, or keep them the same. I guess we'll all just have to wait and see

Perception and reality are rarely the same thing. The only danger to the U.S. from an event like this is that an unwise leader acts on perception. At that moment, reality will take perception's place. Let's hope that the world is intelligent enough to understand this.

Reality may drive consequences, but perceptions drive decisions. I'm sure there are many global leaders right now who are just a little less afraid of the US Navy now. This sort of incident is exactly the kind of thing that bolsters people like Putin.

Only for those who accept others' words for truth. Teach people to think and that threat disappears. regardless, only one reminder is ever necessary. So the worst case scenario is we are forced to remind the world of the truth. Not ideal or a big deal. But making statements like the one you posted doesn't help people understand the truth. It simply plays on baser emotional response mechanisms, which are the very things that allow leaders to use perception instead of reality to push their agendas. A better path would be to remind people of the truth, not lament about perception
