I think this is just the first iteration. If hoards want to seek asylum I believe they will be housed at tho border and then the vetting process will start (no catch and release). Commanders on the scene can ask for supplemental units.

Often these units deploying or coming back are listed on the Army times weekly. My wife in Canada thinks that National Guard soldiers being sent to the border is illegal but she doesn't realize or know from my experience that I had friends from the California guard that were deputized for Hurricane Katrina and they worked alongside the Louisiana National Guard and worked with a police liaison working with them. There's a lot of misinformation in the media concerning the National Guard. Army Reserve and active-duty, as far as I know, they can't be armed unless they make special provisions under Posse Comitatus

It depends on the mission. I was CA National Guard (40th MECH INF), and we had crowd control and riot training - with full battle-rattle. Military Police train for these mission with and without weapons. Since this is a mission other than war, I'm sure the commanders in the field will get enemy assessments and then plan accordingly. Those who are designated to have close contact with invaders may be unarmed, but rest assured, there will be over watch, eyes in the sky and plenty of reaction force available to deal with any potential threat. The press LOVE to talk about Posse Comitatus, but fail to realize that only prevents troops from acting as police, and it has nothing to do with troops acting as troops. These people on their way here are NOT US citizens, and President Trump has already labled them "invaders," which means they can be apprehended and detained without habeas corpus as unlawful combatants. Yup, same status as unlawful combatant Islamists who were and are at Gitmo. I'm sure there have been plenty of conversations about division of duties between civilian and military. It will all depend on thresholds of violence and numbers on the invader side. If they come to the border in an orderly fashion, civilian authorities will take the lead. If otherwise, don't be surprised if the military steps in. Hooah!

Posse Comitatus applies to Active Forces interaction with US citizens not an invading force. The USCG has MIL CIV authority as a federal law enforce agency. That is why they are under DHS. In 1916 President Wilson sent Gen Pershing on a punitive raid into Mexico in retaliation for border attacks by Poncho Via on Columbus NM. For Active force this operation is MOOTW. Military Operations Other Than War. Side arms can be issued for personal defense.
