I say that this is an apologist view, and that GEN(R) Mattis and his statement shows that in some ways, he has no idea or perspective on what is really going on in the military both during his service and afterwards today in his current position.
Here is his statement as stated within the article - "But leaders today (along with everyone else) are losing solitude with hardly any awareness of the fact. “If I was to sum up the single biggest problem of senior leadership in the Information Age, it’s a lack of reflection,” says retired four-star Marine Corps General James Mattis."
Really? With no reflection on how we got to this point?
So many people have stated and shown that they have a lot of respect for this individual, but as they say, "One screw up negates a thousand atta boys." (And a whole bunch of you out there in this nation and around the world are hypocritical when it comes to both sides of that issue.) The true issue - The lack of time to complete the now required multiple task that have very little to do with combat effectiveness. It is real telling that on one hand he (Mattis) admits this and on the other appears to deny it.
Ourselves have in the past actually acknowledged this and it has been written about numerous times. One of the more recent monographs on this is titled, "LYING TO OURSELVES: DISHONESTY IN THE ARMY PROFESSION." Which is available for reading or download at http://ssi.armywarcollege.edu/pdffiles/pub1250.pdf
I suggest that all interested in Leadership and Management read the monograph and think about the lessons that can be learned by going over the subject material again.
