I'd say America was in a much worse place in, say 1860. Or 1864, for that matter.
Or in 1919.
Or for pretty much the entire decade of the 1930s.
And the late 60s certainly would give current times a run for their money.
One of my favorites saying I picked up during my AD time is "the two best units are the unit you came from and the unit you are going to." Everyone always bitches about how bad the current unit is, and how their last unit did everything so much better. Then as soon as they get to the new unit - the one they were bragging about going to - the old POS unit is suddenly the greatest thing ever, and the current unit is all jacked up.
So to, is it with administrations. We look for faults with the current administration and compare it to the successes of the last one. But we rarely, if ever, look at the successes of the current administration and compare to the failures of the previous. This is less true for the hyper-partisan folks, but for the rest of us, we only want to criticize, and praise only begrudgingly.
