Neurofeedback treatments for PTSD has limited availability at the VA Medical Facilities, so Homecoming for Veterans reached out to clinicians that will provide treatment at no charge to Veterans with PTSD. Should the VA have this treatment available to all Veterans with PTSD?

"Homecoming for Veterans (HC4V) is dedicated to providing Neurofeedback treatment for veterans in need with PTSD at no cost. Neurofeedback (EEG Feedback) is training in brain function based on information derived from the EEG (electroencephalogram). With such training, rapid recovery can be achieved for the relief of PTSD symptoms that include sleep problems, pain, irritability, anger and rage, as well as cognitive deficits. The training is based on reinforcement of better regulated brain behavior as judged by the EEG. The repetition of this exercise for a number of thirty-minute sessions leads typically to improved cognitive function and improved emotional control. There are up to 16 electrodes placed on specific parts of the head to measure the brain waves during the treatments.

The work is success-oriented rather than deficit-focused. It is a fitness strategy that avoids the jargon of mental health, and suits the soldier's natural orientation toward a training and fitness program.

Neurofeedback specifically alpha-theta protocol, is a training process that has been scientifically-proven to improve post traumatic stress disorder. It helps with issues that people develop as the result of trauma, grief, phobias or dysfunctional family systems.

Alpha-theta protocol is named after the two main types of brainwaves that are involved during the neurofeedback training process. There is no talking involved. The client listens to feedback from his or her brain, which brings on a deep calm witness state. People can often observe or think about their dislodged memories in this safe dream-like state. Negative response patterns operating on a sub-conscious level release trauma and old or false beliefs so the client can enjoy life with a new and healthier perspective.
