I've read about Elizebeth Friedman years ago. Having been in the SIGINT community over 40 years ago, the community put a lot of emphasis on reading about our historical figures. American code breaking was advancing pretty well in between the world wars until Congress shut it down. "Gentlemen don't read other gentlemen's mail" was the excuse Congress used to shut down America's intercept & code-breaking capabilities. The good thing is many of the early pioneers understood the world better than Congress & kept their skills sharp, finally going back to work just before Pearl Harbor.
