1stSgt Nelson Kerr - yep remeber watching that series about the 101st in Afghanistan it was called taking fire and one of the soldiers he developed a gambling addiction because he stated missed the risk of combat and felt gambling was some sort of equivalent.

This certainly isn't new. Remember going to pachinko parlors in the 70s and being amazed at the gambling going on. Think technology has just made it a lot more accessible.

And made new ways of gambling to like fantasy football, online poker just to name a few.

That's true the world over, not just Japan. Face it gambling has been around about as long as mankind.
