How did The Prisoner ever get made?

If you have never watched The Prisoner you are truly living an incomplete life. It was, to me, the most creative piece of storytelling to ever appear on television. I remember we young officers living at the BOQ at Fort Shafter Hawaii dropping whatever we were doing, leaving our dates wondering at our absence, as we rushed back to the day room to watch the next installment when it was first aired. I have the complete set on VHS, but now watch it streamed on the Internet, maybe four times since that first exposure. The one story that I had heard but is not repeated in this article is that McGoohan produced it because he was constantly bugged by people asking why he had quit starring in Danger Man when it was at the height of its popularity. In The Prisoner, the powers that be keep trying to get him to tell why he quit (the secret service), and still he refuses ("That would be telling") Well, I guess we'll never know now that he is dead and misinformation still swirls in his wake.
