Did the person leave DNA on the tree, or did they analyze the DNA of the tree? The article doesn't articulate that well.

Article mentioned that it was the DNA from the tree. The killer (husband/child's father) had tree needles on muddy boots. Police traced the needles to the specific trees located around body of victim (wife/child's mother).
