One of the issues is that defectors often find it hard to assimilate into the South Korean culture. They go from a state where everything is provided for them (albeit poorly) into a hyper-competitive modern world over a short period of time.

Another issue is similar to one experienced by defectors from the former Soviet Union... choices/decisions.

Going from a society with NO CHOICES to one where you have a wide selection of toilet paper (for example) is a shock.

SPC (Join to see) very well said it takes so much effort to learn how to live in South Korean society especially coming from a communist socialist dictatorship. That's why there is good few that can't adapt and want to go back to the south because they don't know how to provide for themselves.
