Did anyone force them into these life decisions?
Perhaps choosing a graduate degree that would lead to a job that pays enough to pay for such a loan would be a better choice...
Look. I can't tell you how many times I've had to counsel Soldiers who made stupid choices not dissimilar to this - payday loans for new rims, new Dodge Challenger at 13% interest, marrying a stripper...
I'm not saying that going to grad school and taking out student loans is the same thing, but it is more alike than different. And this way of thinking is enabled by the likes of Bernie, who sells snake oil that all this debt will just go away.

Many of the Nominees running for President liked the Bernie direction. I'm wondering when this will migrate from "just student loans" to include Rent, Auto and day to day income. We laugh now at the idea, but when the ball starts moving. How do you stop it?

There has been a huge shift in the way society thinks about education. For my generation, we've had it hammered into us that a 4-year degree is the only good thing to do after high school. So part of the blame might go to the high-school graduates, and part of it might go to societal pressure.

Then again, student loan forgiveness is a bad idea. There are better ways to help people deal with student debt, like really encouraging the skilled trades.

Some of these people abuse the student loan program. Last year I read a story about a lady in Georgia who went back to school took out a student loan just to pay her back rent then basically dropped out. You borrow the money you pay it back plain and simple.
