Are we really surprised. Think about what the US government and other employers do. One thing that also appears to be missing from the story is not only the 'public' access systems such as LinkedIn and Facebook, but also how 'credit bureaus' work in collecting and disseminating information.
Another aspect of this is that in some areas, employment agencies will not even consider an individual unless they have a LinkedIn account. The big problem in parts of this besides the harvesting of information is when someone is banned from one of these, correcting the problem is just as onerous as trying to correct information at a credit bureau, as illustrated in this report.

Look at linkedin and facebook post of some personnel, they give up EVERYTHING. The intel world has even developed new tools to gather the information form these open source sites. People don't seem to take the threat seriously.
