When President Carter knocked the props out from under the Peacock Throne and the Shah of Iran abdicated, we turned to Iraq as the linchpin of our diplomacy in the Middle East. When that fell apart we turned to Saudi Arabia (fundamentally the hillbillies of the Arab world). With friends like the Saudis, who need enemies.
