The answer is simple, the modern progressive is changing the "rules." It actually started in 1972 when the US government began meddling in the diets of private homes. Some asshole in the food industry couldn't compete so they lobbied congress to create the "food pyramid" and we've been getting collectively more unhealthy since. Obesity existed before then, but not at the "epidemic" levels that are now being shoved into our heads to "nudge" our cognitive behavior.

I'm a firm believer in evolution. It takes hundreds if not thousands of years for our bodies to adapt to our surroundings. The Okinawan diet that was praised for several years was supposed to be good for us all, but the iodine in fish was not present in landlocked civilizations causing issues in those who used that diet. Some scientists don't look at the bigger picture because they only specialize in a few segments of the science. The modifications that are occurring in our food today are happening so quickly, our bodies are not able to adapt.

Corn itself was never meant to be an year round crop. It's fructose is also not the energy our bodies crave. Protein breaks into complex sugars over time. Sugar itself is only meant as a quick booster, not a long term means of energy production.

I know two vegans personally, one American woman and one Vietnamese man, and they are both over weight. I also know several vegetarians from India who I work closely with that have immunity issues, getting sick every cold/flu season, and when they break a bone, it's not pretty.

I was never over weight until I got older and bought into the "I need to eat healthier now that I'm older" mantra. I began eating the same way I did when I was younger, southern fried bacon and eggs, fresh foods and less GMOs (since it's getting harder to find foods that haven't been genetically altered) and my weight has stabilized.
