Normal is relative to the camera being used, on some cameras the 50mm distorts the image due to the image sensor, such as the APS-C cropped sensor. It's not an issue on a full sensor. The camera peeps in my area rarely use prime lens, favoring various telephoto lens and achieve decent results for any type of shooting. They also carry 85mm for portraits. I think it's is a subjective area that is anything but normal and more based on personal preferences. It's also cheaper to buy budget telephoto lens then buying multiple individual prime lens and easier to carry around.
I'm partial to the 35mm lens over the 50mm lens. This is the one I got ->https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P1G6Z34/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is a great deal of confusion surrounding crop factor, and it is particularly difficult to explain, but let’s give it a try, shall we?Before we dive in, let me dispel two vicious rumors related to crop factor that are circulating throughthe photography (Internet) world today:Crop factor does NOT affect a lens’s focal length.Crop factor does NOT affect a lens’s aperture. Before you scroll to the bottom of the screen to leave a comment to...

I will go through the entire article at a later date, but I’ve got to say, I don’t use a prime lens much. I’ve got a 24mm f/2.8, and an 8mm fish eye. The rest are zoom, mid range, 24-105 and 18-124, or numbers close both f/4. Above that I use a 70-200 f/2.8 and a 28-300 f3.5-5.6.
I had a 60mm macro but found I can do macro with both of my L series Canon White lenses almost as good as I was doing with the 60mm.
I guess it’s a bit of personal preference, plus I’ve got a 1.6 crop ratio
