Since we do not have the language we need effective tools to get success. Many of these people did a great job. It takes a year to get DLI to train a Korean linguist....and that is really someone who can talk at the 2d grade level....with a vocabulary of weapons. @

As a DLI grad, I agree whole heartedly with you. I saw the struggle of native born Americans with Arabic, Russian, Chec, Chinese, etc. This program should be continued with a few more security checks out in place.

Yup the 09L program. Truth be told, we did have a lot of CI investigations stem from this though (I am sure you are aware). But yes, not having enough qualified linguists will hurt us. I have heard they may be returning the language requirement to 35M's though (HUMINT). Any HUMINTers care to comment on that?

CW2 Brad S: Language skills are important to the job and I deem them necessary for every HUMINTer. The only downside to language skills, you know where the Army is going to send you.

SFC William H. - I think language skills are important and you have to understand culture. BUT, how many Korean linguist in Germany...too many, and I remember the best place to meet Germany linguist in the US Army was in Itaewon German bar. I do wish you were correct on linguist always went to their language country.

PFC GG-15 Ret Jim Lint: Without the culture, an Agent really has no cover; no matter the language skill level. The statement about job assignments was what happened to me. As a note, in agreement with you, the language officer sent to assist me during Op JC spoke Arabic!
