How to clear a paper jam

I believe this is called a "field expedient" (with the emphasis on "expedient") My favorite expedient in Vietnam was replacing the chain drive in typewriters (that advanced the ribbon) with dog tag chains. (They rusted away pretty quickly) What was your favorite field expedient.
