Good point Chief! CO XO, Staff Officer, BN XO, BN Staff Officer, etc. These positions are critical to the unit but are also a proving ground to prepare officers for taking command.

It was quite a shock to me to learn that one could expect 16 or more years of staff out of 20. I had no idea that was such a huge percent of what officers did. Looking back, a class on PowerPoint and office work would have been very helpful.
