To CPT Jack Durish statements i add NOTHING beats an intelligent user. If you teach them what to look for it helps immeasurably. Remember that "user" is spelled with a silent 'l' ... (l)user. FWIW, i recommend Zone Alarm to my clients.

The best way to handle computer viruses (malware, etc) is to avoid getting them in the first place. There are three practices that every computer user should make a habit: (1) Use reliable software designed specifically to detect and guard against viruses and malware; (2) Update that software regularly (automatic updates are best) ; and (3) avoid opening email attachments and visiting websites unless absolutely certain that they are safe. (PS: Don't trust a website link or an email attachment just because it came from a friend)

As the saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
Prevention is the best way but like everything it isn't foolproof. I regularly fix computers and I have found a simple, ( and free ) setup that works very well. I use it on my own and recommend it to all my clients. As always it is good to buy the premium versions as well
~AVG free edition ( if you buy it you can get it packaged with Tune Up Utilities which keeps your computer running fast without your interference )
~Spybot Search & Destroy (immunization function is key)
~Firefox Browser with Adblock Plus addon. ( Gets rid of ads & popups so you can't click on it to begin with. Most malware is spread through clicking ads and routing to infected pages )
~Malwarebytes free edition ( I only keep this on standby incase anything gets through. Never found anything yet 5+ years )
~ Regularly update your computer's security updates via the manufacturer's recommendation.
~ Be advised, Apple users. You are NOT immune.
