I call it available darkness, and it is my favorite kind of photography.
Better in black and white, full-frame sensor is a must, and zoom lenses need not apply (slow apertures).
My current favorite available darkness rig is a Leica M Monochrom with an f/1.4 lens or a Canon 5D3 with an f/1.2 lens. Cameras are already 4-years-old and obsolete, but they still do the job because the good stuff is all in the glass.
