I used to train Narcotic Detection dogs in my civilian life, his tips are right on. The number one thing to remember is time. It takes a lot of time and commitment to train a dog. The more time you spend with the dog, the better. The problem is that most of us have a limited amount of time to do such things.

The thing is, many people want results right now, and whine when it takes longer. I met a guy that had tossed 3 dogs because to him they weren't "trainable" then got pissed off because a lady trained all 3 of them and tried to get them back. He lost his case of course, but was still butt hurt and refused to take another trained dog she offered him....she wasn't going to split the three he tossed because they were trained as a team. Any animal can be trained if you have the patience, but many don't!

Not sure "Fred" would do well with these Tips...
His Guide Likes are...
Eat, Sleep, run the Deer thru the woods, keep the Squirrels in the trees and the Cats out of the Yard... and fetch what ever Daddy shoots...
he gets pepperoni jerky and drinks warm beer... sleeps in the basement next to the heated and his life is happy...
he sits in the passengers seat of the truck and hangs his head out so his ears flap in the breeze and can find the best burger Joint in town 5 miles outside of town...

I don't have a dog COL Mikel J. Burroughs so my lack of a "dog don't hunt":-)
One son has a 120 pound Akita-pit bull mix and another has a pit bull and a boxer. The Airborne-Ranger son who is still incarcerated doesn't have a dog.

LTC Stephen F.
SSG Kyle Stromgren - The Akita Pit is very friendly and loving to everyone who that son welcomes. He is generally instantly obedient to that son - sometimes to me.
The dog does think it is a lap dog and sometimes on top of me when I am sitting on the couch to get in between my son and me where the dog likes to rest when we are watching TV.
