Airlines have mature game theory analysis for prices, maintaining planes, pilots, crews, geography. The bottom line is that we/customers are unwilling to pay much for better service or space until the cost is close to charter service.
United owns the Chicago connections and has little incentive beyond price point.
It seems each company that tries better service at a higher price just loses market share. Ah, game theory we love you!
