I often reflect on the opportunity we aviators from the 60s had to experience the refinement and development of military aircraft, not only in top end performance, but in flight controls, navigation, and communication. It is amazing when you compare the Wright brothers' achievements to the F-14s and 747 that were operational when many of us left active flying. On the rotary wing side, many of us trained in aircraft that were among the first operational of the type (H-13 and H-34) and again experienced development of capabilities that were only imagined even in the 50s. We truly experienced quantum leaps in aviation capabilities, and performed with aircraft that would be considered barely acceptable and even unsafe by today's standards.
