Hurricane proof house: Is it possible to build a hurricane proof house?

We are currently retrofitting an apartment house that we own in Los Angeles to comply with the latest standards in earthquake readiness. Each major earthquake inspires more testing and improved designs. I hope that people in the paths of hurricanes use this experience for the same purpose. We visited St Thomas this past November and I could easily see the potential for the destruction we are now witnessing. In many cases, even total loss is no big loss. Shacks and shanties can be rebuilt quickly and cheaply. (I suppose that's one way of preparing by not preparing) However, for others, hopefully they'll take building codes more seriously
