I understand the dark humor of the shirt, but is it sending the wrong message to the public about veterans, especially those that have served in combat and might have combat related PTSD?

I agree. IMO, if you think that T shirt is OK for wearing around the public then you can't complain that civilains think all veterans are crazy head cases likely to use guns. It doesn't help to feed the very stereotype you're trying to defeat. Of course most vets will get the satire and dark humor, but many civilians won't.
