The problem with Socialism is the government forcing people to do something. Not everyone in this nation is Christian (or even religious at all for that matter). Per our Constitution, it is not the government's job (nor power) to force me to take care of someone else.

COL Ted Mc - if you read the writings of the Founders, it is very clear that in stating "general welfare", they were referring to infrastructure and not what we call welfare in today's society. Stop with the condescending tone, it's annoying to be honest!

SFC Justin Scott - Sergeant; Regardless of what interpretation you place on the words of the Founding Fathers,HOW DOES THE FACT that the "Republican" government of the United States of America can FORCE people to provide financial support for projects which the "Republican" government of the United States of America feels are "serving the public welfare" DIFFER FROM THE FACT that a "Socialist" government can FORCE people to provide financial support for projects which the "Socialist" government feels are "serving the public welfare"?

PS - Yes, I know that it's annoying to be honest.

COL Ted Mc - The difference comes in the notion of redistribution of wealth. It is one thing to pay taxes to contribute to the common good (roads and other forms of infrastructure), it's an entire different thing to pay taxes so that another doesn't have to work or to offset their lack of income due to lack of marketable skills!

SFC Justin Scott - Sergeant; Sorry, won't wash. In BOTH cases you are FORCED to do something. Differentiating between the two based on whether you agree with doing what you are being FORCED to do does not change the fact that you are still FORCED to do it.

PS - You pay "school taxes" to offset children's lack of potential income due to a lack of marketable skills, therefore ANY public funding for education must fit into your definition of "Socialism".

PPS - Considering that the majority of the funding for post-secondary education DOES NOT come from tuition fees then the statement "I paid for my own post-secondary education." is deluded.

That was an interesting read. I wonder if this were to apply to those of all faiths?

SrA Edward Vong - Airman; Since all religions advocate caring for the unfortunate, parts of the article most certainly do.
