CPT (Join to see) One study says it is killing us, another says a couple is healthy, another said drink all you want. I know to facts: 1) at the end of our time walking this earth, we are going to die regardless of what we do. 2) Ancient people drank alcohol because at the time WATER was deadly to drink.

Have a drink, or don't either way enjoy your life it's the only one you have.

PO3 Steven Sherrill This article isn't about having a drink. It's about the long term effects alcohol has on alcoholics. If knew someone who drank himself to death literally, you might feel differently.

CPT (Join to see) - No not really. If it worked that easy we wouldn't have smokers and drinkers would we? The mantra is "it won't happen to me." So even though my mother dies of cancer I'll still smoke. Even tho my dad dies of liver failure, I'll still drink. In fact, like most Irish, we'll be drinking at his wake, right? Besides...you know you can't tell us sailors not to drink, LOL.

CPT (Join to see) - I did know a person who drank himself to death. We tried to tell him moderation, when someone wants it, and won't hear that they have a problem, you cannot force them to change. Your choice becomes separate from that person, or watch them descend into darkness. I will never watch that again. I agree with you that long term affects are a terrible thing, but I have to agree with PO3 Donald Murphy in that most alcoholics, smokers, drug users, and addicts in general understand the health risks of what they are doing, then continue to do it anyway. Hel, I know that eating the way I do is going to kill me, but I still do it. Why? Because Steak is awesome, and I am not giving it up.
Sincerely, I am sorry if you have lost a loved one to this terrible disease.

Wow what a load of shit! So if you are a raging alcoholic these issues would happen. Drinking regularly, but not in excess is not going to give you throat and ass cancer. Drinking too much water has adverse heath reactions.

Again, poor opinion based reporting that every news source does now. Notice that there is no facts or sources quoted. If there were, I could disprove them with 10 minutes and Google. That is why they are not on there.

SGT William Howell If you ever spent 12 days watching someone die a slow death as their body shut down because of alcohol abuse you wouldn't think it is a "Load of shit!" If you were the one who had to make the decision to remove all life support and make the funeral arrangements, you might feel differently.

@M Cannonie I am not belittling alcoholism. I am truly sorry that you lost a loved one to alcohol. My Grandfather was an alcoholic. If cigarettes had not got him, booze would have.

I am calling a very biased and nonfactual article that was not well written. The author is taking information about full blown alcoholism and disseminating it as what will happen with a casual to moderate drinker. Drinking "regularly" and alcoholic are 2 different things. It is misinformation. I don't like misinformation in any subject.

If the title of this article had been, "What happens when you become and alcoholic." then I would have been fine with this article.

SGT William Howell - I don't think the author implies that a casual drink has the same effect as being an alcoholic at all. The author says, "I wish I had learned the following information years ago, or had at least been more mindful of it. While I do believe it is common knowledge that alcohol is not particularly good for us, I don’t believe very many of us know just how bad it is. I myself was shocked to learn that it is a known carcinogen, and was further surprised to discover that regular alcohol consumption actually inhibits the body’s natural ability to produce crucial vitamins.
Considering alcohol is a depressant, this information makes clear how negatively it can impact both mental and physical health, often leading to a vicious cycle of self medication. Let’s take a look at some of the long term negative effects of alcohol on the body."

CPT (Join to see) Actually black pepper is more of a carcinogenic than alcohol. Because we take both in moderation it is a null point for the average user.

The truth is that alcohol in large doses, taken over long periods of time, your body will stop producing crucial vitamins. The same can be said for eating just one food group over long periods of time.

It does not lead to "often" self medicating. With a small group called "alcoholics" it is an issue. For the other 100 million people that have a drink daily it is a non issue.

The whole article is an opinion piece that the writer tries to pass off as an information piece. It is poorly written and would probably only get a "C" in a creative writing class. I would have to give if and "F" for the half truths and no citing of sources.

Again, alcoholism is a terrible thing that destroys families and peoples lives. There are millions of people that battle it every day. It is not something to be taken lightly, but portraying it as something that it is not does nobody any favors.

To paraphrase a great man...well not necessarily great, but funny:
You see, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it’s the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
And that, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

If you didn't chuckle, check your fun meter!
