Nothing says freedom like being armed. It can be argued that the worst of the persecution of blacks occurred when they were freed and a gun was the only thing that stood between them and a lynching. Although I can't yet find definitive evidence of this but I have heard that the NRA was the outgrowth of many organizations of gun owners coming together including an early affiliation of former slaves.
