Information security is a new battlefront for sure. My company employs a SOC (Security Operations Center) set up for faster response times and more proactive security efforts than the traditional reactionary model. This is a newer model for us and all reports indicate that it's working really well so far. Thankfully, we didnt get hit by wannacry.

Valid point. But you have to admit that it has been much more newsworthy over the past several years, particularly as we all share more and more information about ourselves online.

Information Security has always been a battlefront, however to back up Thomas, with more transparency and accessibility, the battleground has evolved. So information security in regards to technology has become an even larger battlefield and is fairly "new".

SrA Edward Vong - True in a sense, but the government is still railing on the same path as they did back in 1991-1993 over PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) to include the parsing of the issue of "munitions export without a license". (FBI-Apple encryption dispute)
Scoot forward a few years and the ups and downs of the AV and Anti-malware software companies.
Then on to the 2008 DOD ban on removable flash drives, where two years later (2010) threatening people with court martials over the use of flash drives. I would say it is not new but ebbs and flows as times change, and over the exact same things.

Think about this, if you are familiar with the TACCS (Tactical Army Combat Computer System) - Why they were rarely if at all connected to either a radio, network, telecommunications system. (Circa 1982 to 1994) TACCS had that capability built in.

The 'battlefield' may have evolved, but it really has not changed that much. The principles and actions to prevent, mitigate, and resolve the issues have not changed in all of that time.

Thomas Hoopes - It is more 'newsworthy' because a high profile individual, entity (corporation), political party, or government agency, failed and or ignored basic tenets and actions to prevent or preclude stuff like this from happening. Case in point is the Clinton email scandal. I can tell you from personal experience of being an Army Information Assurance Manager from 1993 to 1996 in two different units, that attitudes and actions like Ms. Clinton's were no different then and for exactly the same reasons; that part has not changed.
