This has been a bigger hotspot than most Americans have realized, especially since Pakistan got Nukes in 1985. The ISI has been pretty blatant in their open support of terrorist groups that have inflicted some mass casualties recently. I thought that the Indian would be across the border in force after Mumbai. The dangerous thing is that the Pakistan government has become increasing extremist and the history of conflict between the two countries has been pretty one sided in favor of India. My biggest fear is that if they were handed another serious defeat, they would go nuclear. That's an exchange they won't win, but would certainly cost millions of lives in the crowded sub continent.

SSG(P) (Join to see) - I personally don't think the Indian's would initiate, but I would be almost certain that they would hit back and hard. The recent governments are increasingly pro Hindu and the terrorist activity from Pakistan is a real political hot potato in recent elections. Taking a hard line is pretty popular, in spite of being the country of Ghandhi, and I believe that the current regime will be forced to take an aggressive stance against further incursions.

They've had nukes for decades and hated each other longer than that. This seems a minor skirmish like many they've had over the years without resorting to using their nukes, what's the big deal?

So you are saying The Changing of the Guard with a dramatic Stompin at the main gate between Pakistan and India will continue like nothing happens, right?

The last real war was in 1971, that one began with a major pre-emptive air strike on Indian Air Bases. That one last 13 days and ended with the establishment of Bangladesh as an independent nation and a massive defeat on both fronts of the war for Pakistan. The Indians practically destroyed all of the Pakistan Navy. That's why my concern about a major defeat for Pakistan, are they crazy enough to go nuclear is faced with another humiliating setback? Unfortunately, my gut feeling is yes.
BTW, the Indian Nuclear program was aimed at China, their only other adversary with the Bomb at the time. I don't think the Indians saw Pakistan as the driving force for the Bomb, especially after their success in 71.
