Real science seldom makes exciting and spectacular television. But generally speaking, Star Trek produced dramatic stories that were more faithful to science than many other science-fi series. Star Trek’s writers often started with real science, but then stretched it into amazing, dreamed-up inventions to tell epic, entertaining stories.

Star Trek also inspired tech that we have in everyday use now. For example, Captain Kirk's communicator = flip-phone. Both TOS and TNG (and later shows) used the PADD, which is today's tablet computers.
