I don't think it's sad. Personally I've wanted one for the longest time. Not because I believe there's a current threat, but mainly because of the functionality in being prepared for a worst case scenario. Some of them are actually quite nice. My favorite are the missile silos that they converted into livable homes.

I would love to have one of the old silos that have been converted. So much you can do with one. I would have one hell of an armory. :)
