Hard to believe, it’s located in Alabama’s capital city! Sarcasm involved
The based was doomed from the get-go. Not even the Army back then wanted. It’s there due to a political desired.

SSgt Ray Stone
MAJ Javier Rivera thats says a lot being the Army rejected it. Not surprising though cause majority of Air Force bases are in undesirable locations

Most installations are like that SSgt Ray Stone; in undesirable locations due to its remoteness, cheap lands, and vast training areas to roam around and blow stuff; or flight at supersonic speed (Mach 50) for USAF!

Good article, with some good recommendations. But everyone knows Maxwell AFB is NOT a desirable location, and teaching SOS is NOT on most officer's bucket list. There are exciting, rewarding, challenging assignments in the AF, and this will never be one of them. The author has some good recommendations, but applies the title FAR too broadly based on his narrow view.
