Everyone wants control of these guys until something goes wrong...

My biggest critique, and one that would possibly eliminate some of these problems, is the fact that since 2001, SOCOM has operated increasingly independent of the Area Commands. I do understand that SOCOM worries about the misuse of highly trained soldiers, but the history of the command shows they are just as guilty of using their assets when the local/conventional forces would have been a better choice. But if you're a carpenter, every problem is a nail and every answer is a hammer.
