What is the US play here? Do we support the protests (overtly or covertly) or do we let this play out and see what remains?
There are two possible outcomes I see: the protest is successful and the theocratic influence in government is finished (or limited), or the government wins and a more hard-line Islamic republic is instituted.

The Iranian Tudeh party (communists) had a LOT to do with the unrest in ‘79... and it was Soviet involvement that led to the coup in the ‘50’s... and IIRC correctly it took threats from Harry Truman to get the Russians to leave after WWII...

Sgt Wayne Wood - That is interesting. I did not know that. So, yes, there is definite precedent and Russia has never really stopped its expansionist tactics, they just sort of fell out of favor with the rest of the world. This would be an opportunity for them.

My guess,
A false flag operation to make it appear the Jews are at fault. They crack down on the protesters and charge towards Israel with Russia on board, a coalition of Islamic opportunistic Sunni partners like Turkey and North Africa in the name of the Third most Holy site mention no where in the Koran.
