Erin Nelson Projecting that power without support vessels, stores, spares, supporting specialized vessels in the task group, would be highest of high adventure. The margin for failure would have to be very narrow for the Iranians to sign up for it. If they pull it off, it is a huge propaganda victory and a demonstration inside their spheres of influence. If they don't, and have ships laid up in ports between the Strait of Hormuz to the coast of Africa and Western Europe because they became engineering casualties, the become a laughing stock and lose face in their spheres of influence. I would receive it as a threat, that in the future, when their capability matures, this will be something they do.
"Iran's navy [10] consists of a handful of frigates and dozens of small missile boats, plus a few small diesel submarines including three Russian-built Kilo-class subs. It's a regional navy that poses some danger to ships operating in the Persian Gulf, but lacks the long-range vessels—and the equally vital resupply ships—to operate 6,000 miles away near the North American coast."
No T-AKO, T-AKE, T-AKR and the like to support the rag tag fugitive fleet. They also do not have a basing network. They may want to thumb through "The Influence of Sea Power" by Alfred Thayer Mahan.

Erin Nelson - they have some replenishment capability, but it looks like they have one oiler of consequence, the Kharg, which is a U.K. Ol Class ship that has hit 40 years of age. They have a handful of other cargo carriers, but they look like LSTs. Not exactly blue water UNREP.
