If people were smart, they'd go in together with a few other people, by the animal directly from the farmer, and take it or have it delivered to a reputable butcher, and have it processed, it's far cheaper than buying from the store.

Great idea in theory, but issue is that all the factors are not usually all in one place (money, meat, storage/shipping, etc.)

Will be doing this again in the near future, but not until I have a generator. Have lost 2 large chest freezers in the past from power outages. Will not make this investment in meat again without a generator.

The problem is gov regulations made nearly impossible for small plant to keep going. Most people here would buy a hog or finished beef in the fall have it processed and fill there freezer. Now the small plants a few and far between, and giants control the packing industry. Same thing happened with dairy, drove all the little guys out now you have 700 to 1000 or bigger cow dairy herds
