I grew up on a farm/ranch. We raised all kinds of livestock. We had named cows which were part of the family and numbered cows that were raised for beef. We only ate the animals that didnt have names, the others lived out their lives more as pets. If you raised livestock, would you have any problem eating them?

I was Raised on a dairy Farm... and the names we gave the Critters were "Pork Chop" and "Baby Back"... "Sir loin" and "The NY Stripper"

I call every single one of my chickens "chicken or girl" and have ZERO problem eating their unborn children!

I think it's a matter of if the animals you are raising are intended for market, or if you raise just enough to feed yourselves. If you are taking them to market then I think it is more justified that you might not eat your own. Then there is also creating a relationship with neighbors to trade for their goods and such. But I think some countries where food security is an issue this would be a no-brainer. Of course, you would eat it.

I am taking over the cattle ranch my dad started many years ago. I've been doing some research as I haven't spent much time around the besties in many years when I came across this article. Maybe dad set things up the way he did so we didn't get attached to any of the stock, maybe it was my mom's influence. I figure if I am feeding them, I know what went into them and would rather eat what I raised than who knows what is fed at a feed lot somewhere.

I agree, after I finish this degree I plan on working with the FDA or USDA as a health inspector. Meat inspection would be ideal. I can understand knowing what goes into the cows and how to get the best product going forward.
