Every day it appears that my daddy was smarter than I thought. (And every day he was a meaner SOB than I ever thought)

Haha. So true. I think they had to be mean. Mine was. But he raised 7 kids on a boilerman's salary.

An interesting article. I suppose it's always important to make distinctions between what one believes is "right", and what one does. Personally, I think that's a critical element of any discussion involve social morality. All my life, I "believed" that the "right" way was to love and marry one woman... and stay true to her for life. While I "grew up" over my twenties and early thirties however... I found that a difficult proposition. I was free, but I was never truly "happy". I had very beautiful "friends"... I had "fun", but I never felt that my life, or those "relationships" were leading anywhere positive. I made excuses, I found reasons, I tried to ignore the nagging questions of soul and purpose.
Then, I met the woman who would become my wife.
Every married man knows you sacrifice many things in a marriage, but it was honestly the first time in my life I felt self-respect and lasting meaning. When our child was born, I became something I had always respected, but never felt "worthy" of becoming. My family gives me a reason to be my best that extends far beyond any strength, discipline, or calling I may have ever had before.
I believe it is God's plan, but I don't think one needs to be a person of faith to recognize the positive influence a true marriage can have.

Outstanding! Thank you for the great perspective. It is not often we exchange such truths learned from life and experience.
