Hitler's reasoning was quite simple - Italy had a large, experienced and heavily armed blue water navy. Large enough to give the British Royal Navy a nightmare or two. Italy was likewise plagued with resource issues and was unable to finish her aircraft carrier.

Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on June 10, 1940 fledgling AXIS power Italy declared war on France and Great Britain. As the late-comer into the Axis, Italy declared war in the waning months of the conquest of France would become their ally as Vichy France.

That turned out to be a big mistake on their part. The Italians should never declare war on anyone for any reason.
